This Week in Books (4th May, 2022)

Hosted by Lipsy Lost and Found, my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I’m reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words.

LAST BOOK I FINISHED READING

When Detective Kim Stone rushes to the scene of a house fire, she’s shocked to discover it’s claimed the lives of two teenage children and their parents. But this tragedy is not quite as it seems. Each body is marked by a gunshot wound and the mother, Helen Daynes, is holding the gun.

The case sparks painful childhood memories for Kim who suffered at the hands of her own abusive mother. As she begins to untangle the dark web of secrets within the Daynes family, Kim and her team discover Helen had a history of clinical depression. But could it have driven her to murder her loved ones?

[Absolutely brilliant addition to this long-running series. Review to come next week.]

THE BOOK I’M CURRENTLY READING

When young London professional Alex Evans is informed that his sister’s body has been pulled from an icy lake in Northern Lapland, he assumes his irresponsible sister accidentally drowned. He travels to the wealthy winter resort where Vicky worked as a tour-guide and meets Agatha Koskinen, the detective in charge. Agatha is a no-nonsense single mother of three who already thinks there’s more to Vicky’s case than meets the eye.

As the two form an unlikely alliance, Alex also begins to suspect the small town where his sister lived and died is harbouring secrets. It’s not long before he learns that three other women have gone missing from the area in the past and that his sister may have left him a message.

On the surface, Koppe, Lapland is a winter wonderland. But in this remote, frozen place, death seems only ever a heartbeat away.

[I was supposed to have read this one last week but circumstances got in the way so I’m playing catch-up. So far, this slow-burner is having a bit of a hard time keeping my attention.]

WHAT I’M (PROBABLY) READING NEXT

Last week’s poll winner was I Know What I Saw, which I haven’t yet got around to reading 😳.

New poll this week, with some new choices. Fair warning that whichever book wins might not actually be read until late May or even early June since the other half is home for the next two weeks so my reading will be rather limited and I have June ARCs to get through as well. The poll might take a two week break too. I haven’t quite decided yet.

Anyway! This week’s selection looks like this. Not to pile pressure on your shoulders but these are all books I’ve started and never finished but kept because I felt they deserved a second chance. (or more 😬)

There you go! As always, feel free to leave a comment with the book of your choice and why it got your vote. It may take a while before I get to this one but I promise the winning book will be reviewed! At some point. 😉

Until next time, happy reading! xx

The Echo Killing because I’m a fan of cold cases. I might put this on my list too 😁

Me too! Is it appropriate to vote on my own poll? Because I’d vote for that one myself 😂

I’ve voted for Fragile, even though you’ve tried it before. I’ve had my eye on it for ages… 🤷🏻‍♀️

I mean, it’s Sarah Hilary! I love her books! I can’t for the life of me understand why that went wrong.

I voted for The Echo Killing since that way you can get the second book off your TBR too… 😀

Your consideration is much appreciated. You just really like bringing those TBR numbers down, don’t you? Although I’ve already purchased three books this month so I fear you’re engaged in an uphill battle 😳

It is bad that I feel relieved now that I was refused access to an ARC of The Last To Disappear after first being invited to the blog blast? I might possibly have dodged a bullet there. xD I hope it will improve for you though! xx
