This Week in Books (03-24-2021)

Hosted by Lipsy Lost and Found, my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I’m reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words.

LAST BOOK I FINISHED READING

Over twenty years ago, heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family’s estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors, and the items stolen from her family were never recovered.

Until now.

On New York’s Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead not only on Patricia’s kidnapping but also on another FBI cold case – with the suitcase and painting both pointing them towards one man.

Windsor Horne Lockwood III – or Win as his few friends call him – doesn’t know how his suitcase and his family’s stolen painting ended up in this dead man’s apartment. But he’s interested – especially when the FBI tell him that the man who kidnapped his cousin was also behind an act of domestic terrorism, and that he may still be at large.

The two cases have baffled the FBI for decades. But Win has three things the FBI does not : a personal connection to the case, a large fortune, and his own unique brand of justice.

[Another … win …. (ahem, sorry) from Harlan Coben. Quick and easy read, hugely entertaining and the perfect escapism.]

THE BOOK I’M CURRENTLY READING

London, 1841.

The Rajah sails for Australia.

On board are 180 women convicted of petty crimes, sentenced to start a new life half way across the world.

Daughters, sisters, mothers – they’ll never see home or family again. Despised and damned, all they have now is each other.

Until the murder.

As the fearful hunt for a killer begins, everyone on board is a suspect.

The investigation risks tearing their friendships apart . . .

But if the killer isn’t found, could it cost them their last chance of freedom?

[Almost halfway through this one and a little conflicted. I’m enjoying it but not as much as I thought I would and it’s not quite what I was expecting.]

WHAT I’M (PROBABLY) READING NEXT

Joe is done with the cities. He’s done with the muck and the posers, done with Love. Now, he’s saying hello to nature, to simple pleasures on a cozy island in the Pacific Northwest. For the first time in a long time, he can just breathe.

He gets a job at the local library—he does know a thing or two about books—and that’s where he meets her: Mary Kay DiMarco. Librarian. Joe won’t meddle, he will not obsess. He’ll win her the old-fashioned way… by providing a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand. Over time, they’ll both heal their wounds and begin their happily ever after in this sleepy town.

The trouble is… Mary Kay already has a life. She’s a mother. She’s a friend. She’s… busy.

True love can only triumph if both people are willing to make room for the real thing. Joe cleared his decks. He’s ready. And hopefully, with his encouragement and undying support, Mary Kay will do the right thing and make room for him.

[This will be an interesting one. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book but the second one fell flat for me. That was quite a few years ago already as well and I may possibly be the only person on the planet who hasn’t watched the Netflix series so I can’t wait to see if Joe’s shenanigans will win me over as much as they did in ‘You’ back in the day.]

What are you reading this week? Do let me know in the comments. Happy reading! xx

I can’t wait to get to Win! I’m also excited to get back to Joe Goldberg, too.

Interested to see your thoughts on Dangerous Women so far. I started it but didn’t finish it.

Interesting and understandable. I’m still only at page 187, I started it on Monday. Since then, I’ve started and finished one book (Harlan Coben) and am close to finishing another two that I started yesterday. I’d say the overwhelming feeling right now is “disappointment”.

I feel glad it’s not just me. I went in a little bit of a slump at that point and wondered if I wouldn’t have enjoyed anything I picked up but maybe this book sent me into the slump!

This is exactly why I started picking up other books in the meantime. I hardly ever do that but my reading has been erratic enough the last couple of months and I really don’t want to end up in a slump. Hope you find that extra special book that will end your slump soon!

Unfortunately, I won’t be reviewing it at all because my overwhelming feeling was disappointment.
