This Week in Books (01-27-2021)

Hosted by Lipsy Lost and Found, my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I’m reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words.

LAST BOOK I FINISHED READING

Trying – and failing – to keep his head down and to stay out of trouble, ex-con Zaq Khan agrees to help his best friend, Jags, recover a family heirloom, currently in the possession of a wealthy businessman. But when Zaq’s brother is viciously assaulted, Zaq is left wondering whether someone from his own past is out to get revenge.

Wanting answers and retribution, Zaq and Jags set out to track down those responsible. Meanwhile, their dealings with the businessman take a turn for the worse and Zaq and Jags find themselves suspected of murder.

It’ll take both brains and brawn to get themselves out of trouble and, no matter what happens, the results will likely be deadly. The only question is, whether it will prove deadly for them, or for someone else.

[Gritty crime fiction on the mean streets of Southall, London. It was a bit of a wait for the second book in this series but worth it. Review to follow.]

THE BOOK I’M CURRENTLY READING

One death might be an accident.
Two deaths looks like murder.

A man is shot dead in his own home, and his pregnant wife, Evie, is found with the gun in her hands.

Detective D.D. Warren instantly recognises her. Sixteen years ago, Evie also shot her own father. That killing was ruled an accident.

D.D. doesn’t believe in coincidences. But this case isn’t as open and shut as it first appears, and her job is to discover the truth.

Evie might be a victim.

Or she might be about to get away with murder again.

[I fell behind on the D.D. Warren series but I’m now trying to catch up. This one is SO GOOD! I very reluctantly put it down last night because I’m old and need my sleep but I can’t wait to get back to it!]

WHAT I’M (PROBABLY) READING NEXT

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever-and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore, and he remembers her name.

[No, you are not seeing things. This is indeed a fantasy novel. Yes, I’m perfectly alright. Thank you for asking. 😏]

What are you reading? Do let me know! Hope you’re all having a wonderful week. Happy reading! xx

I loved Never Tell! I can’t wait to see your opinion on a fantasy novel.. although it’s still realistic fantasy (no mythical creatures or wizardry) right? Happy reading Eva!

Apparently it would fall in the category of magical realism? I don’t know. It’s all the same to me. 😉 (but I loved it)

So did I! Now if only I can actually write the review for it, I could spread the word.

How fun that you’re thinking of reading Addie LaRue as I was looking at a library ebook the other night deciding whether to give a try or not. :/
