I was the girl who survived the Nothing Man.
Now I am the woman who is going to catch him…

You’ve just read the opening pages of The Nothing Man, the true crime memoir Eve Black has written about her obsessive search for the man who killed her family nearly two decades ago.

Supermarket security guard Jim Doyle is reading it too, and with each turn of the page his rage grows. Because Jim was – is – the Nothing Man.

Catherine Ryan Howard is back and once again, she’s hitting it right out of the ballpark! If she hadn’t already been on my list of go-to authors, this would most definitely have done it.

Two decades ago, a killer entered the home of twelve year old Eve Black and killed her father, mother and little sister. For some reason, Eve’s life was spared. Now, Eve has written a book. “The Nothing Man” is a true crime memoir about Eve’s obsessive search for the man who killed her family. When security guard Jim Doyle comes across the book, he can’t resist the urge to pick it up. But with every turn of the page, he gets more and more angry. Because Jim IS the Nothing Man and he really doesn’t appreciate being called a name like that.

A book within a book, you say? Sold! I mean, really, what more do you need to know? The Nothing Man has the most fantastic true crime vibe throughout that just pulled me in from the very beginning. I immediately loved the refreshing premise of trying to lure a serial killer out in the open like this. As the reader, you know from the start who the killer is but if you think for one minute that would make this book a total bore, you’d be immensely wrong. What it does, is create a delicious game of cat-and-mouse. It’s dark, intense and thrilling to the very end and extremely exciting to read Eve’s book through Jim’s eyes because you just can’t wait to see how he’s going to react.

I’ve read all of Catherine Ryan Howard’s books and each and every one of them has been an absolute corker. She is one of those authors who manages to keep surprising you with every book. The Nothing Man is nothing short of absolutely brilliant. Will Jim finally be caught after all this time? Will Eve find out why her life was spared twenty years ago? Will she survive taunting Jim like this? Obviously you’ll have to find out for yourself but I can tell you that in a year where my reading mojo has been all over the place, The Nothing Man pulled me in and didn’t let go until I flipped that final page. I read it in a single afternoon and in my current world, that’s the best compliment I can give it. I absolutely can’t wait to see what Catherine Ryan Howard comes up with next! Highly recommend this book and her other ones as well, if you haven’t read those yet.
