Look Behind You. You never know who’s out there.
Chloe wakes up bound in an underground tomb with no memory of how she got there. She manages to escape but nobody believes her story. She is forced to retrace her steps and to find out the truth of what happened to her. But who can she trust? And why does she feel like someone’s following her?
Look Behind You has been on my to-be-read list for years and is the first book I’m reading for my Beat The Backlist Challenge. While the story is a fast-paced and suspenseful mystery, I think I expected a little bit more. However, since my only other introduction to Sibel Hodge was “Untouchable” last year, I fully admit that maybe my expectations were a tad too high.
The opening chapter really pulls you in and the author does an incredible job in setting the scene. I almost felt like I was right there with Chloe, feeling the panic, the fear and the desperation when she realises where she is. Of course you root for her when it becomes clear nobody believes her and I enjoyed going on this journey with her to find the clues.
This is one of those plots where you can’t say too much for fear of revealing the whole thing. I did think it was a bit predictable, having figured out quite early on what was going on. Despite the author’s valiant efforts to add a few red herrings, I didn’t waiver from my idea and kept hoping a massive twist was just around the corner. But none of this made me want to stop reading or ever feel like the story was dragging on. At 238 pages, it’s a very quick read with a great, if slightly unsurprising, plot but still highly enjoyable so I will definitely read another book by this author.
Look Behind You was published in 2014.
